Search operation: Missing hiker (34) was sleeping in a hut

Because the man had not arrived at the Wiesbaden hut as expected, the hut landlord informed the emergency services. At lunchtime, however, the missing man appeared in the restaurant, to the innkeeper’s surprise. The 34-year-old German said he reached the hut at night and went to sleep, according to the Vorarlberg police.

The hiker set off from the “Piz Buin” inn towards the Wiesbadener Hütte at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, contrary to the advice of the innkeeper and a mountain guide. At around 7 a.m. the innkeeper asked the hut manager about the hiker. Because he knew nothing about the 34-year-old’s whereabouts, a search operation was launched. The search area was narrowed down to the Bieltal, the Ochsental and Klostertal using cell phone tracking.

Hut keeper not informed

In addition to the mountain rescue, the Alpine police were also involved in the search with helicopter support. A total of around 30 people were looking for the missing person. Around midday the innkeeper reported that the man he was looking for had just appeared in the restaurant. The German explained that he reached the hut exhausted around midnight after having problems finding the way. He went into a room and went to sleep without informing the hut keeper.
