ART – It’s a piece of history that is revealed after years in the dark. Sketches drawn on the walls of a Florence cellar, by the second Renaissance master Michelangelo, while he was hiding from an angry pope, are being shown to the public for the first time. These charcoal sketches line up on the walls of an old coal cellar located in the depths of the Medici Chapels, which opened to the public this Wednesday, November 15, as you can see in our video at the top of the article.

Known as the “secret room” by Michelangelo, this space of ten meters by three, was used to store coal until 1955. It was then “unused, sealed and forgotten for decades under a trap door covered with cabinets and furniture” before being rediscovered in 1975, the museum said in a press release. “These walls seem to be full of numerous sketches of figures, largely of monumental size”explains curator Francesca de Luca in the press release.

Former director of the Medici Chapels, the art historian Paolo Dal Poggetto, attributed numerous sketches discovered to Michelangelo Buonarroti, best known for his statue of David and the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.

Dal Poggetto believed that Michelangelo hid from Pope Clement VII in this room for two months in 1530 because the pontiff, a member of the Medici family, was ” furious “ against him. The artist had served as supervisor of the city’s fortifications during the short-lived Republican government (1527-1530), when the Medici were driven from the city.

Starting November 15, small groups of no more than four people per tour are allowed entry at a time, with breaks between each tour to limit the amount of time sketches are exposed to LED light. Enough to admire the Italian master’s pencil strokes in complete tranquility.
