England and Ukraine complete the semi-finals at the U21 European Championships in Georgia and Romania. The offspring of the 1966 World Champion defeated Portugal 1-0 (1-0) in the quarter-finals. Anthony Gordon (34th) scored the goal in Kutaisi, Georgia. England now meets Israel.

Ukraine surprisingly defeated title favorites France 3-1 (2-1) in Cluj. Rayan Cherki gave the French the lead (19′), but Georgi Sudakov (32′, penalty kick and 44′) and Artem Bondarenko (86′) turned the game around. Chelsea’s Michailo Mudryk initiated the first two goals in his first tournament appearance. Ukraine is fighting against Spain for a place in the final.

Spain, Israel and Ukraine buy Olympic ticket

Record European champions Spain beat Switzerland 2-1 (1-1, 0-0) after extra time in the round of eight. Juan Miranda (103rd) scored the decisive goal in Bucharest. Sergio Gomez (68th) had put the Spaniards ahead, but Switzerland equalized through Zeki Amdouni (90th + 1).

Israel beat Georgia 4-3 on penalties in front of a record crowd of 44,338 spectators in Tbilisi. It was 0-0 after 120 minutes. Israel had qualified for the quarter-finals as group runners-up behind England and ahead of defending champions Germany.

Spain, Israel and Ukraine also bought the ticket for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by reaching the semi-finals. Hosts France are already qualified. England could not buy the ticket because there is a team Great Britain at the Olympics.
