The attack on a senator’s convoy in the south-east of the country killed five people on Sunday, September 11. This deadly incident took place in Anambra State, where the independence movement for the indigenous peoples of Biafra, Ipob, is active.

There were no claims following the attack on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy. This elected member of the opposition is affiliated with a marginal party – the Young Progressives party. He was on his way to his home village on Sunday when armed men opened fire on his way.
Ifeanyi Ubah, who was traveling in an armored car, escaped unscathed, but two police officers escorting him, two of his assistants and a passerby were shot dead, according to local authorities. Two other members of the police escort were injured and taken to hospital.
This is not the first time that an official convoy has suffered this kind of attack. At the end of August, the escort of the Commissioner for Children and Women of Zamfara State found itself caught in a shooting in this region of the north-west where many armed gangs are rampant.
In early July, armed men launched an assault on a convoy carrying members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s close security, not far from the native village of the head of state, in the Katsina region. These repeated incidents are a reminder that insecurity is now widespread in Africa’s most populous country.
