A mix between skiing and snowboarding, monoskiing is practiced on two feet side by side on a board, facing the slope. The discipline was born in the 70s in Francebefore knowing its boom in the 80sthanks among other things to the films “ Apocalypse Snow ».

After a decline in the 90s following the arrival of snowboarding, the discipline was reborn in the 2000s : the practice is being restructured, the boards are more technical and easier to handle on the slopes as well as in powder, and certain athletes like the French Xavier Cousseau breaks world speed records in monoskiing (212.30 km/h in April 2006, a record which has never been exceeded).

L’French Monoski Association (AFM) was created in 1999 and has since brought together practitioners of the discipline. The AFM brings together teams, gatherings and manufacturers from Europe, helping to develop this practice as close as possible to the latest trends and innovations: all mountain, carving, touring, freeride, freestyle… For several years, the AFM notes a renewal with a growth in its members, participants in events and especially more and more young people taking up this form of skiing.

The Mondial du Monoski, the largest global gathering of the discipline, organized by the association, will be held this year in Serre Chevalier from February 2 to 4. Monoski enthusiasts as well as visitors will be able to enjoy free tests, initiations organized by manufacturers, entertainment, raffle and brand village on the Place du Téléphérique in Chantemerle. Of the sessions freeride will complete a weekend of speed competitions and giant slalom. Two evenings are planned in the Salle du Serre d’Aigle in Chantemerle on Friday February 2 and Saturday February 3.

Xavier Cousseauworld monoski speed champion, has lived in Serre Chevalier for 30 years and will be the sponsor of the event: “ Monoskiing is a small industry but there are more and more enthusiasts. We are seeing more and more monoskiers in the resorts. It’s no longer the mono skis of the 80s where we are dressed in fluorescent, monoski brands today offer technical monoskis, and today we see a new generation taking up monoskiing! The World Cup allows this community to come together; some come from the United States, Canada, Sweden, Austria… and novices can take advantage of the event to discover the discipline; there are even monoskis for children! Serre Chevalier lends itself perfectly to monoskiing, you can ski in the forests, there is slope, the playground is enormous! »
