The State Duma in the first reading approved a bill according to which applicants who served in the army will receive additional points when entering a Russian university, technical school or college.
Previously Izvestia wrotethat senators and deputies from United Russia developed amendments to the law “On Education in the Russian Federation”. They proposed that military service on conscription be attributed to special achievements, for which it would be possible to receive additional points when entering a technical school or university. The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education, Mikhail Berulava, noted that the bill could be adopted before the end of the spring session. Then the new benefit will take effect from the next academic year.
On February 9, the State Duma adopted this bill in the first reading.
“Conscription service in the army should be an additional advantage when entering universities and technical schools,” said Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin. “It is necessary to create conditions so that soldiers, after serving in the army, can enter universities and technical schools on preferential terms.”
It is assumed that the amendments will apply to any higher and secondary vocational education and bachelor’s, specialist’s and master’s, postgraduate, residency or postgraduate programs.
According to the authors of the bill, the changes will help “strengthen the patriotic education of students, the formation of readiness to defend the Motherland, as well as increase the prestige of military service.”
Now additional points are awarded for victories in the Olympiads, sports achievements, volunteer activities, graduation from school with honors and other merits.
