The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced the launch of ” several “ new “XXL net square” operations against drug trafficking in France, Monday March 25. These simultaneous operations took place in the Lille metropolis, in the Lyon metropolitan area, in Dijon and in the Paris region, notably in Sevran (Seine-Saint-Denis) and Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine), his office said. . In total, “15,000 police officers, gendarmes and customs officers will be mobilized this week” in France for these operations, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

At the start of the evening on the France 2 set, Mr. Darmanin announced that 496 people had been arrested until today as part of these operations. This figure includes the operation carried out on March 19 in Marseille, where Emmanuel Macron went.

“We have a target of 850 people to interview”declared Mr. Darmanin in the morning. “Our collective job is to show all residents, and especially those in working-class neighborhoods, that security is for them. » He announced that other operations of this type would be carried out “in several other cities in the coming days and weeks”.

“Either we let go of the work against drugs and then we are like the Netherlands, like Belgium, sometimes like Spain, like other countries in South America, in the hands of drug traffickers”either “we are fighting against an octopus whose legs must not simply be cut off but must be reached at its head”declared Mr. Darmanin.

“Empty the sea with a teaspoon”

In the North, where nearly 900 police officers were mobilized, the prefect reported 74 arrests Monday morning, stressing that the operation was « multidélinquance », although it focuses on narcotics. Half a kilo of heroin, four weapons and 70,000 euros were seized during the minister’s visit, announced Thierry Courtecuisse, interdepartmental director of the national police, reporting “property foreclosures in perspective”.

Operations took place in particular in Lille, Tourcoing and Roubaix, said Mr. Darmanin. He considered that the “difficulties” encountered by Roubaix, one of the poorest towns in France, came as in Tourcoing “particularly drug trafficking due to its proximity to Belgium”.

“We are asking them to empty the sea with a teaspoon”said MP David Guiraud (La France insoumise), present during the visit, estimating that “the account is not there for Roubaix” in terms of staff “at the drug squad level (…) protection of minors, judicial police ». “Let us carry out operations against drug trafficking, why not, but the police force will still be in short supply”he reacted.

In the Lyon metropolitan area, Mr. Darmanin reported that the operation took place in the Tonkin district, in Villeurbanne, where he went on Friday.
