Heavy snowfall has caused chaos in Bavaria, southern Germany, particularly in its capital Munich where air and rail traffic is disrupted on Saturday.

Munich airport has extended its closure until Sunday morning 6 a.m. (local time) “due to persistent snowfall”.

In total, 760 flights were canceled.

More than 40 cm of new snow fell in Munich overnight from Friday to Saturday, the weather service said.

Authorities have called on residents to stay at home for safety reasons.

The city police notably advised “d’avoid unnecessary travel and to only take the car when it is essential”, because of “exceptionally heavy snowfall.”

The arrival of winter has also considerably disrupted rail traffic. “Munich Central Station cannot currently be served”said the railway company Deutsche Bahn.

Mainline traffic is completely at a standstill around the city.

Elsewhere throughout southern Germany, train cancellations or delays are also expected, Deutsche Bahn warned, estimating that disruptions are expected to last throughout the day.

A large part of public transport – buses, suburban trains and trams – was also not operating in the Bavarian capital, the Munich public transport company (MVG) also indicated.

The metro could also experience cancellations and disruptions during the day, she added.

Another consequence of this weather unforgiving: the match between Bayern and Union Berlin counting for the 13th day of the German championship, scheduled for Saturday, had to be postponed.

Snow accumulated on the roof of the Allianz Arena stadium “represents an incalculable risk for spectators. Furthermore, it is practically impossible to get to the Allianz Arena”, Bayern Munich said in a statement.

The Lower Bavarian police, for their part, announced approximately 350 interventions linked to bad weather between Friday evening and Saturday morning. She reported five road accidents, with minor injuries.

A large part of Germany has been under the influence of snow and subzero temperatures for several days.

According to the German weather services, the greatest amounts of snow are expected on Saturday in the Allgäu, in southern Bavaria, with 30 to 40 centimeters.

The precipitation should gradually decrease by late afternoon, they said.
