Crazy airport farce in Spain! Around 80 passengers were literally left on the ground in Vigo late Saturday evening (November 4, 2023) while the first class passengers took off before their eyes.
Like the local newspaper “Faro de Vigo“ reported that the preferential treatment of Europa League winner FC Sevilla caused enormous anger among dozens of people who were actually ready to fly to Madrid.
Sevilla FC hijacks a plane and annoys passengers
The 56-strong travel group from the south was already in the terminal late in the evening for the return flight after the away game at Celta Vigo (1-1) when the scheduled plane was taken out of service due to a technical defect. However, the airline Air Nostrum, which is the club’s travel partner, still had an ace up its sleeve.
To the dismay of around 80 booked passengers, the airline, which operates its flights under the name Iberia Regional, quickly canceled a flight to Madrid that had already been called for boarding on the information boards at the gate.
The Sevilla professionals, along with their coaching team and support staff, suddenly marched past the astonished waiting crowd – and finally got into the “hijacked” plane on the tarmac. It finally took off towards Andalusia at 11:31 p.m.

According to reports, there were no alternative travel options in the evening for the actual passengers, who had already had to wait 80 minutes longer for their flight to the capital due to capricious weather. Instead, forms for compensation claims were distributed at the counter.
Airline apologizes to passengers left behind
Because Madrid-Barajas Airport is one of the largest European air traffic hubs, the capital was only planned as a stopover for many of the booked passengers from Vigo. However, nothing was initially known about the exact number of missed connecting flights.
“It’s incredible. We are still at the airport with no word about the theft of the plane by Sevilla FC. “Banana Republic,” complained a user on X (formerly Twitter) shortly before midnight on Saturday and shared a photo in which the footballers could be seen boarding the plane.
On Sunday, the airline finally reacted to the insolence and sheepishly admitted its wrongdoing. “Air Nostrum deeply regrets the disadvantage suffered by passengers on flight IB8869 from Vigo to Madrid, which was solely due to an unfortunate error on the part of the airline,” it said in a statement.
The airline also promised: “In the coming week we will contact all passengers to compensate them for the inconvenience caused.”
