Shanghai on Tuesday achieved the hoped-for goal of no coronavirus cases outside quarantine areas for three consecutive days, but most residents will have to live with lockdown measures for a longer period before resuming normal life.
For the rest of China’s cities that are subject to closure, the absence of new local cases of the disease for three consecutive days means that these cities have achieved the “zero Covid” level and will begin to ease restrictions.
Shanghai plans to resume outdoor activities in phases, as it will reopen some grocery stores and pharmacies this week, but most restrictions on travel will remain in effect until May 21, after which public transportation and other services will gradually resume.
By June, restrictions are supposed to be lifted, but residents will still be required to get regular check-ups.
And the authorities allowed more residents to leave their homes this week. But the walls remained surrounding many of the residential complexes, in addition to the streets being almost empty of private cars, with most residents still staying in their homes.
Shanghai recorded less than a thousand new cases of COVID-19 disease on May 16, all within the areas subject to the most severe restrictions.
