A shark attacked a Connecticut woman who was scuba diving off the Caribbean islands of Turks and Caicos on Wednesday afternoon, environmental officials said.

The 22-year-old Connecticut woman was in the water at the Bone Yard dive site in Princess Alexandra National Park when a shark attacked her.

The islands Department of Coastal and Environmental Resources said the woman was seriously injured. She was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Center for treatment but lost an arm in the attack.

A resort employee called the police shortly after 3:00 pm and requested an ambulance. The employee said the shark had bitten a woman’s leg, according to the Department of Coastal and Environmental Resources.

The incident is being investigated by the Island Police. While incidents like this are highly unusual, swimmers, snorkelers, divers and boat operators should be careful in the water, according to environmental officials.

No additional information was immediately available.
