Wrexham AFC’s Hollywood-backed era has taken a sharp turn with the abrupt departure of American CEO Michael Williamson, replaced by veteran administrator Shaun Harvey. Worldnews.com reported, confirming the club’s acting CEO change as the team’s Championship momentum stalls.
A Hollywood Ending, a Premier League Start?
The club co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac announced the departure of CEO Michael Williamson. Williamson, who joined in summer 2024 after senior roles at Inter Milan and in MLS, was instrumental in Wrexham’s rise from the fifth tier to the Championship. He was named Football Industry Leader of the Year in 2025.
“We thank Michael Williamson for his two years at Wrexham and for his work taking the club from League 1 to the Championship,” Reynolds and Mac said in a joint statement. “Since our takeover five years ago, Wrexham have had historic success on the pitch and won hearts all over the globe.”
From Hollywood Hype to Championship Hurdles
The timing of Williamson’s exit is critical. Wrexham’s dizzying ascent has stalled. After clinching promotion to the Championship in 2025, the team narrowly missed the play-offs last season and currently sits 16th in the campaign, a mixed start that makes the club’s future unclear.
Williamson, while effective, did not always prove a popular figure with the fanbase. News of his sudden exit was met with a mix of relief and celebration on social media from some supporters, a sharp contrast to the global adulation the club enjoys.
Shaun Harvey, 56, is a no-nonsense operator with deep roots in English football. He has worked with Reynolds and Mac since their 2021 takeover, first as an advisor and then as a director starting in 2023. Before joining Wrexham, Harvey was the chief executive of the English Football League for six years, following spells at Leeds United and Bradford City.
The club’s statement emphasized Harvey’s integral role in their journey. “Shaun Harvey has been an integral part of this journey from the beginning, and we know Shaun will give every support to Phil Parkinson and the lads on the pitch while keeping the broader Wrexham community roaring us on,” Reynolds and Mac added.

The Harvey Effect: A Return to Basics
As Wrexham’s story continues to unfold, the real test for Harvey will be to blend the club’s global appeal with the hard-nosed realities of English football. The Hollywood dream may have captured the world’s imagination, but it’s the gritty work behind the scenes that will determine if Wrexham can turn its Hollywood story into a Premier League reality.

Shaun Harvey knows this club inside out and I hope he gets Humphrey back on board as well as sorting out getting rid of another senior member of staff who makes herself look busy but does nothing. Money could be better spent elsewhere than on her salary. 👍
