Siemens will expand its AM activities for the American industry. For example, the group invests in the Meltio Robotik Systems and in a Production System from Desktop Metal. Siemens is also setting up an advisory board to advise the group on the fast-growing needs of the AM market.

Siemens announced this last week during Rapid+TCT in Chicago. “Now is the time to support even more customers and accelerate their transformation from single machines to serial additive manufacturing plants. North America is moving in this direction,” said Rajas Sukthankar, Vice President, Motion Control, Siemens Industry, Inc.

Platform for machine builders and manufacturing companies

That is why Siemens is strengthening its focus on additive manufacturing in the US. This should help the industry with the transformation towards serial production with AM. This applies to both the Tier One suppliers and the job shops. Siemens complements Meltio and Desktop Metal hardware with its own solutions for design, simulation with digital twins and simulation of production processes with virtual systems. The Charlotte Advanced Technology Collaboration Hub (CATCH) in North Carolina acts as an ecosystem platform for system integrators, machine builders and users of AM technology, the manufacturing companies.

Meltio print technology

One of the AM techniques that Siemens integrates in this innovation hub is the Meltio Enginer robot integration. The print head of the Spanish manufacturer is placed on a robot arm. Among other things, Meltio has the option of integrating Siemens Sinumerik RunMyRobot into the AM system. RunMyRobot controls the kinematic path of an industrial robot as it integrates with the CNC machine.

Fundamental change through AM

“We are on the cusp of a new frontier in US industry, where the adoption of additive manufacturing will fundamentally change the landscape, end-to-end, from product to machine to production,” said Steve Vosmik, head of Siemens Additive Manufacturing in the United States. The group wants to be at the forefront of this transformation.
