Another addition to the two-toed sloths: a baby was born at the beginning of February.
Stubenberg (OTS) – Since their socialization in 2016, the two-toed sloths Speedy and Gonzalez have guaranteed offspring. After a gestation period of around nine months, her sixth child was born. The gender determination will most likely take place in seven months. These regular births within the framework of the European Stud Book (ESB) represent an extremely remarkable success.
To date, only female sloths have been born in the East Styrian zoo. The older sisters were given to other zoos as part of the breeding program. The young animals live in zoological institutions in Poland, Great Britain and Germany.
They live in the South America house together with macaws, coatis, maras, tapirs and capybaras, which are also known as capybaras. The youngest zoo resident spends his/her time stretched out on the mother’s stomach, always ready to eat.
Originally, two-toed sloths come from northern South America, where they inhabit areas ranging from humid tropical rainforests in the lowlands of the Amazon basin to cloud forests at altitudes of about 2400 meters. The diet is primarily vegetarian in the form of leaves, buds, fruits and berries.
Opening times during the Styrian semester break:
From February 16 to 26, 2023, the animal world is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Exception: on Shrove Tuesday the ticket office closes at 1 p.m.
