Significant increase in self-inflicted accidents: 41 dead cyclists in 2023

The increase in self-inflicted accidents is noticeably high, according to an analysis by the ÖAMTC accident research on Thursday. The new figures mark a high point that has already been apparent in recent years.

Cycling accidents resulting in personal injury increased to 69 percent from 2013 to 2022. In particular, the number of accidents without third party fault increased by 149 percent during this period. Every second accident involving cyclists is caused by the cyclists themselves. In the same period, collision accidents (34 percent) and intersection accidents (25 percent) increased only relatively little.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs is increasing

77 percent of bicycle accidents cannot be attributed to failure to adhere to the maximum speed limit. The main problems are often a lack of caution in road traffic and insufficient driving skills, emphasizes ÖAMTC traffic engineer David Nosé. An above-average number of cyclists also tend to ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to this, “alcohol, drugs or medication” increased by 255 percent as reasons for accidents. Accidents that occurred after ignoring traffic lights or traffic signs also increased by 197 percent.

Expansion of infrastructure required

The ÖAMTC traffic engineer therefore calls for greater awareness of the rules and safer driving from cyclists. In order to increase security, an expansion of the infrastructure and increased controls by the police are also required.
