Singapore Airlines to use BMW-owned Designworks for new business class seats

German automotive design house Designworks joined RECARO Aircraft Seating to build Singapore Airlines’ newest business class cabins, featuring full-grain leather, sliding privacy doors, and 79-inch lie-flat beds across 72 widebody aircraft starting next year.

Singapore Airlines Funds Multi-Billion Cabin Overhaul from Internal Cash Reserves

  • Singapore Airlines (Singapore Airlines (SGX: C6L)) allocated more than S$2 miliar ($1,6 miliar) to overhaul long-haul cabins across four travel classes, funding the upgrade entirely from internal cash reserves that reached S$9,1 miliar at the end of June.
  • The newly designed business class seats utilize automotive principles from BMW Group’s Designworks, featuring a Y-shaped satellite-inspired motif, bright colorways, mineral grey upholstery, and three-point aircraft seatbelts.
  • Installation begins in the second half of 2027 across 72 aircraft, targeting Boeing 777-9, Airbus A350-900 long-haul, and Airbus A350-900ULR airframes.

Automotive Styling Reaches 30,000 Feet

The latest cabin refresh from Singapore Airlines introduces automotive ergonomics to commercial aviation. Unveiled during a launch event in Singapore, the carrier partnered with BMW Group subsidiary Designworks and seating manufacturer RECARO Aircraft Seating to revamp its long-haul fleet, detikTravel reported. The business class cabin utilizes full-grain leather upholstery with specialized stitching, layered textures, and metallic accents.

Singapore Airlines Reveals New First and Business Class Suites

Julia de Bono, Chief Executive Officer of Designworks, noted that the firm brought its luxury manufacturing standards to the airline sector. “We bring the same craftsmanship standards to Singapore Airlines’ latest Business Class by applying automotive design principles to create a space that feels more premium and timeless,” she stated.

The physical dimensions of the new seat offer passengers a bed length of 79 inches (approximately 200 centimeters) and a width of up to 24 inches (approximately 61 centimeters). When configured for daytime flight operations, the seats feature smoother reclining mechanisms alongside adjustable lumbar and leg supports. Specific middle seats can transform into a double bed configuration once the electronic center divider is lowered.

Singapore Airlines Just Revealed Its Next First and Business Class

According to Ni Nyoman Wira writing for Kompas, the business class seats are predominantly finished in mineral grey with blue and yellow highlights. Ong Wah Li, Vice President of Product Experience at Singapore Airlines, explained the ergonomic rationale during a press conference. “Because customers have told us they want to sleep in a natural, forward-facing position, we designed ample legroom so they can stretch out and move, as well as adjust their sleeping positions for better rest,” he said.

Carrier Allocates Capital from Cash Reserves to Redesign Premium Cabins

The interior redesign forms part of a broader S$ 2 miliar capital expenditure program funded through the carrier’s internal balance sheet strength, Investing.com reported. Lee Seow Huat, speaking to Reuters and cited by Kontan, confirmed that the funding stems from the airline’s S$ 9,1 miliar cash reserves recorded at the end of June. Management directed the majority of this capital toward premium cabins due to higher per-unit costs and stronger profit margins relative to economy seating.

The cabin upgrades will be retrofitted or installed natively across 72 aircraft.

Aircraft Model Business Class Seat Count Deployment Timeline
Boeing 777-9 54 seats Late 2027 onward
Airbus A350-900 Long Haul 42 seats Late 2027 onward
Airbus A350-900ULR 70 seats Late 2027 onward

David Flynn, editor-in-chief of industry publication Executive Traveller, described the business class rollout to Kontan as a solid and necessary catching-up maneuver to remain competitive against rival carriers, rather than an extreme structural leap.

Regulators Enforce Strict Safety Standards Affecting Widebody Delivery Schedules

Passengers access the KrisWorld platform through high-resolution touchscreens measuring up to 22 inches, complemented by spatial audio technology and Bluetooth headphone connectivity.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg informed investors that strict impact safety standards imposed by regulators have affected delivery schedules across widebody aircraft programs industry-wide, according to details reported by Kontan. Singapore Airlines plans to initiate the physical installation phase on its 72-aircraft long-haul fleet in the second half of 2027.
