Princeton Women’s Track and Field Opens Season Strong at Rutgers Holiday Classic
The Princeton women’s track and field team made a powerful statement as they kicked off the indoor season at the Rutgers Holiday Classic in New York City. Held at the Armory on Friday, the meet served as a triumphant celebration of the team’s hard work and dedication.
Record-Breaking Performances and Podium Success
“This December meet has always been more of a celebration of all the hard work put in the last three months rather than a season opener,” Head Coach Michelle Eisenreich said. “And what a celebration it was! We had countless season opener bests, all-time personal records, and a school record. Our team has been laser-focused on an indoor championship all fall, and this meet was a testament to their collective effort.”
Freshman Jazmyn Singh blazed onto the scene in her collegiate debut, shattering the program record in the 300m with a remarkable time of 39.04 seconds. This surpassed the previous record set in 2020 by Katie DiFrancesco (’21), earning Singh second place at the meet.
Singh’s electrifying performance was followed by another victory as she anchored the 4×400 relay team to a first-place finish. Joining her were Khushi Umesh, Maisha Atkinson, and Lauren Harris, who clocked a final time of 3:49.80.
Individual Stars Shine Bright
Julia Jongejeugd dominated the 60m hurdles, securing first place with a time of 8.67 seconds. Shantell Kwofie raced to second place in the event with a mark of 8.74. Kwofie continued her winning streak, taking home first place in the shot put with a new personal best of 14.99 meters. Siniru Iheoma followed closely behind, earning second place with a mark of 14.95 meters. Makenna Marshall took fourth place with a throw of 13.78 meters.
Angela McAuslan-Kelly secured second place in the weight throw with an impressive mark of 17.08 meters, while Iheoma claimed third with a throw of 16.83 meters. In the 60m prelims, Alexandra Kelly and Soraya Patterson each set new personal bests, clocking in at 7.85 and 8.09 seconds, respectively. Freshman Brooke Jackson displayed remarkable consistency, running 7.69 seconds in both the preliminary and final rounds to secure fourth place overall.
Looking Ahead
Three Tigers set new personal bests in the 300m, showcasing the team’s depth and potential. Asante finished fourth with a time of 39.66 seconds, while Harris and Georgina Scoot earned eighth and 13th place with times of 40.91 seconds and 41.77 seconds, respectively.
