The Rugby World Cup France 2023 will not be one more for Córdoba. The Argentine team Los Pumas will have six Cordovans among its ranks, five born in the Capital and the rest, in Villa María. A surprising figure and gratifying for provincial rugby, which has been experiencing great growth.

Never before in the history of this sport have so many local players been part of the same Los Pumas squad in a World Cup. In the five previous World Cup appearances (New Zealand-Australia 1987, South Africa 1995, Wales 1999, New Zealand 2011 and Japan 2019) as many people from Cordoba were part of the national team, one for each of these World Cups.

The people from Cordoba that make up the official squad to play the World Cup in France are the second line Matías Alemanno, fly half Santiago Carreras, fullback/wing Juan Cruz Mallía, prop Eduardo Bello, scrum half Lautaro Bazán Vélez and third row (wing/eighth) Joaquín Oviedo. They all play for European clubs and have a touch in international competitions.

France 2023 will take place from September 8 to October 28. It is the tenth edition of the tournament, 20 teams will participate distributed in four zones of five countries each. 48 games will be played and, as always, the Webb Ellis Cup will be at stake. Argentina will join group D along with England, Samoa, Chile and Japan. The Pumas will debut on Saturday against the English.

In the World Cups in England 1991, Australia 2003 and France 2007 there was no Cordovan in the Argentine team.
