SK Sturm’s Strong Performance and Player Grades in Europa Conference League Match

2024-03-14 22:18:49

It was a reconciliatory farewell to international business.

After a remarkable performance, SK Sturm secured an away draw at OSC Lille in the second leg of the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League (match report>>>).

The “Blackies” showed a much better team face than they did a week ago in Graz. No player really fell off, one or two impressed across the board.

LAOLA1 To do this, distribute grades to all Sturm players (1=Very Good, 2=Good, 3=Satisfactory, 4=Sufficient, 5=Not Satisfactory).

VITEZSLAV JAROS – 90 Minuten – Rating: 3

This time I wasn’t forced to make as many dream saves as I did in the first leg. Often had a bit of trouble at corners at the beginning, but otherwise there was nothing for the Czech to hold on to for a long time. Not even at 0:1. His best moment came with a brilliant save against Yazici.

MAX JOHNSTON – until the 90th minute – grade: 3

The young Scot had his problems at the beginning with Lille’s dynamic left side around Haraldsson and Cabella. But stabilized as the game progressed and ultimately played the game dry.

GREGORY WÜTHRICH – until the 61st minute – grade: 1

The defense chief plugged many holes at the back and caused danger up front. Even though Biereth was ultimately last in line, the goal that made it 1-1 belonged primarily to him. After a top performance, he was replaced after about an hour with a slight injury.

DIMITRI LAVALEE – 90 Minuten – Note: 2

Was only able to clear the ball insufficiently before the 1-0 lead, but that’s no big surprise given the pace. Otherwise stable as usual and hardly disturbed, this time Lille, together with Wüthrich and Affengruber, kept away from their own goal much more effectively than a week ago.

JUSUF GAZIBEGOVIC – 90 minutes – Grade: 2

Showed that he can play left-back just as well as he can play right-back. Convinced throughout the entire game with a lot of offensive drive without neglecting the defense.

STEFAN HIERLÄNDER – 90 minutes – grade: 3

In his first starting eleven appearance in 2024, he was rather invisible apart from an attempted header after 29 minutes. As he moved backwards, he seemed a bit overwhelmed by Lille’s high pace. Towards the end he visibly ran out of strength.

JON GORENC-STANKOVIC – 90 Minutes – Notes: 3

Started the game a bit sloppily, with a few errors in the build-up, but quickly recovered and then showed the usual stable performance.

TOMI HORVAT – until the 68th minute – grade: 2

After just two minutes he could have ensured a much more exciting encounter than it ultimately took place, but he lacked conviction when it came to his top chance from close range. The corner that hit the second post perfectly before making it 1-1 was all the better. Overall, a good game from the Slovenian.

OTAR KITEISHVILI – bis 45. Minute – Note: 3

One of the most noticeable players in Graz’s strong start, but subsequently disappeared completely. Replaced during the break for reasons of protection.

SZYMON WLODARCZYK – 90 Minuten – Note: 3

For the first time this calendar year, a chance in the starting line-up for the Pole. He could only use this to a limited extent. Worked hard against the ball, but was rarely involved in his team’s combinations and, apart from a header shortly after the break, remained mostly harmless.

MIKA BIERETH – bis 45. Minute – Note: 2

Prepared Horvat’s early goal opportunity with a lot of emphasis, but was then left off for a long time. Shortly before the break his best moment came when he extended Wüthrich’s header and thus “stole” his goal from the Swiss. He was also rested at halftime.

ALEXANDER PRASS – from the 46th minute – grade: 3

After missing the previous week with an injury, he was initially rested this time. Came into the game at half-time and brought a bit of a breath of fresh air. But he didn’t tear up any trees either.

AMADY CAMARA – ab 46. Minute – Note: 3

Impressed with his carefree attitude when he came on as a substitute, but was rarely on the ball afterwards. When he was, something impressive usually happened.

DAVID AFFENGRUBER – from the 60th minute – grade: 2

With him in the back four, the Graz defense did not become any less stable – on the contrary. Although at the time he was substituted on, Lille was only at half throttle.

WILLIAM BÖVING – from the 68th minute – grade: 3

His substitution brought a bit of fresh air. But the Dane’s big accents were missing.

NIKLAS GEYRHOFER – from the 79th minute – grade: used too briefly
