Here are some interesting facts about sleep that you definitely don’t know

Most of what we know about sleep has only been discovered in the last 25 years, but it’s fair to say we’ve made up for it. Scientists and researchers around the world are learning more and more about sleep every day, teaching us things we’ve never even dreamed of.

1. 1.12% of people dream entirely in black and white

What’s even more interesting is that before color television entered our lives, only 15% of people dreamed in color. Also, older people dream in black and white more often than younger people.

2. Humans are the only mammals that intentionally delay sleep

If you have a cat, you can easily confirm. How nice it must be to sleep whenever and wherever you are.

3. Humans spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping

This obviously varies by age, but is on average. 1/3 is a lot if you think about it.

4. Cats on the other hand spend 2/3 of their lives sleeping

We went above and beyond. This will come as no surprise to most cat parents. Every sofa, keyboard, pillow, rug, quilt, table, etc. transforms into the ideal place to sleep.

5. The record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days (and 24 minutes)

The record is held by a student from California named, Randy Gardner and was set in 1964. Randy experienced extreme sleep deprivation, while others have died by staying awake for too long.

6. Dysania is the condition in which you find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning

We all struggle to get out of bed at some point in the morning. But those suffering from dysania find it particularly difficult. It is most likely a form of chronic fatigue syndrome.

7. The feeling of falling when you fall asleep and the jerks are called “hypnagogic spasms”

No one is quite sure why these jerks happen as we fall asleep, but they are thought to be completely normal. However, they can be increased by stress, caffeine, or physical activity near bedtime. They are more common in young people and decrease as we get older.

8. Almost 1 in 4 married couples sleep in separate beds

According to a 2017 survey, nearly one in four couples now sleep in separate beds. And despite the fact that some consider this to be a sign of a deteriorating relationship, the “sleep divorce” works great for many couples.

9. Sleep deprivation can kill you faster than food deprivation

Neither is obviously a good scenario, but this article claims that sleep is actually more important than eating, in the short term.

10. Within the first 5 minutes of waking up, you’ve forgotten 50% of your dreams

According to ladylike, after those first 5 minutes have passed, 90% of your dream memory is gone. Sigmund Freud believed that this is because dreams represent our repressed thoughts and so our brain wants to get rid of them quickly. However, we are far more likely to forget our dreams, as our brains “rev up” while we are awake.
