Slogans praising the Communist Party of China (CPC) have been painted in Chinese characters on Brick Lane in London, famous for its street art. These are written on top of it, obliterating some of the other graffiti. This issue has ignited a heated debate on social media.
Brick Lane is known for allowing street art artists freedom of expression and freedom of speech. But some on social media have suggested that China lacks ‘prosperity, democracy, unity, freedom, equality, justice, rule of law, patriotism, dedication and friendship’, known as China’s ‘core socialist values’.
They were graffiti praising the CPC. The graffiti has sparked a debate regarding freedom of speech and politics. Some street artists have also added some new graffiti criticizing the Chinese government and mocking Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese citizens, who strongly support the CPC, said they were proud of the graffiti. These are not just Chinese goals but global goals, she said. Meanwhile, some have come forward to criticize the graffiti, saying that one person’s freedom of speech and expression has no right to infringe on another’s rights.
‘You can’t justify vandalizing other people’s art with your graffiti,’ said one social media user. ‘Do you have the courage to go to Beijing and write regarding democracy and freedom? If you do, your home country will arrest you,’ commented another. Wang Han, an artist who came out in support of the graffiti, told the BBC that his intentions were misunderstood and that people’s reaction was harsher than he expected.
