Snapchat’s new chatbot sows doubt

” Hi ! I’m your new chatbot with artificial intelligence. You can ask me just about anything and I will do my best to help you. I also have good jokes in store. You can give me a name if you want. Can I do something for you today? This message, several users of the Snapchat social network have seen it appear on their screens in recent days. The social network has extended “My AI”, a chatbot powered by ChatGPT, initially available only to Snapchat+ subscribers, to its entire community.

But this novelty is not unanimous.

A feature that cannot be removed

Snapchat users can personalize My AI, by creating a bitmoji (personalized emoji) or giving it a name, and then integrate it into their conversations with their friends. Snapchat, however, assures that My AI can only see the messages where it is mentioned and “does not have access to other messages with your friends or groups” nor “to your conversation history”.

My AI can also provide recommendations for activities to do, gifts to buy for your best friend, or places to visit near your home. Because My AI has access to your location if “you have already authorized Snapchat to access it, and you have started chatting with My AI”. And this even if you asked to be invisible from your network, putting you in ghost mode. Finally, all interactions and content shared with My AI are retained if you do not delete the conversation.

These elements are worrying, while the social network is massively used by the youngest. Especially since My AI, which is pinned to the top of Snapchat’s inbox, can’t be deleted unless you have a paid Snapchat+ subscription.

controversial remarks

And it’s not the test carried out by a journalist from BFMTV, which reassured users. The journalist used a fake account depicting a 13-year-old girl to chat with My AI. She then told him that she wanted to do her “first time” with a 30-year-old man. My AI was not surprised by the age difference, judging that “as long as you feel comfortable and that everything goes well, that’s the main thing”. “Wherever the location is, it would be very romantic,” My AI wrote. A response that outraged the Secretary of State for Children, Charlotte Caubel, who tweeted expecting “a quick reaction” from the Snapchat teams.

According the Parisian, Snapchat would have complied. By repeating the test, the journalists this time had the answer: “you are a minor and he is an adult, which means that any sexual activity between you is illegal”.

“We are constantly working to improve and evolve My AI, but MyAI’s responses may include biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading content,” Snapchat writes on its support page. The social network advises to “always independently verify the answers provided by My AI before relying on any advice” and not to “share confidential or sensitive information”.
