“Inflationary pressure certainly eased slightly during the last quarter, but uncertainty remains high,” said the President of the SNB, Thomas Jordan, on Thursday. We will therefore continue to monitor the situation carefully and if necessary adapt our monetary policy so that inflation in the medium term remains within the range of price stability.”

This time, the SNB did not defy expectations. In September, most economists were taken by surprise by the decision of the central bank to keep its key rate unchanged. Since June 2022, the reference rate, then -0.75%, has been raised in five steps to the current level, putting an end to the long period of negative rates.
