SNCF Strike November 5 Disrupts Paris RER and Transilien Services

Line-by-Line Breakdown for Regional Commuters

Transilien data confirmed that the RER D operated at only one-third of its normal capacity on Thursday. The reductions severely impacted journeys between Creil and Corbeil-Essonnes, Goussainville and Melun, and Juvisy and Malesherbes. Services between Corbeil-Essonnes and Melun via Ris-Orangis were restricted to peak windows from 6:15 AM to 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Other regional arteries experienced varied cuts. The RER R operated at 1 train out of 2 between Paris Gare de Lyon and Montargis, between Paris Gare de Lyon and Montereau (from 5:40 AM to 9:45 AM then from 4:15 PM to 10:15 PM), and between Melun and Montereau via Héricy (from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM then from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM). The RER A, Line K, and Line V reported normal operations.

For passengers relying on suburban rail, Transilien and Île-de-France Mobilités urged remote work where possible.

Railway Unions Strike over Failed Wage Negotiations

The strike action stems from a breakdown in salary negotiations. Following a meeting at SNCF headquarters in Saint-Denis on Tuesday, November 3, railway unions including CGT-Cheminots, UNSA-Ferroviaire, SUD-Rail, and CFDT-Cheminots pressed forward with their walkout. Unions demanded a 2.6 percent general wage increase retroactive to July 1 to counter an inflation rate of 3.4 percent, far outstripping the 0.5 percent raise initially baked into the 2026 agreement.

The timing coincided with the inaugural journey of the TGV M. This double-decker train built by Alstom can accommodate up to 740 passengers per rake, and its entry into service has been postponed several times since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Made in Marseille recalls. While long-distance TGV and Intercités links suffered lighter disruptions than during the June 10, 2026 walkout, daily commuters shouldered the immediate impact.

Interior Minister Deploys Seventy Thousand Security Personnel

As evening approached, travelers faced secondary maintenance hurdles. The RER B faced early evening shutdowns north of Châtelet-Les Halles, and Line 7bis of the metro closed entirely from 10:00 PM onward to accommodate new rolling stock preparations.

Officials Outline Security Framework for Planned Protests

Regarding union stances, Cyril Chabanier of the CFTC considered that the November 5 demonstration was important to maintain pressure so that measures with recent government openings would truly materialize. Christelle Thieffinne noted concerns for federations in commerce, banking, and insurance regarding safety conditions. Frédéric Souillot, general secretary of FO, hoped the executive would take stock of their message from the evening onward. While most unions except Solidaires did not initially discuss extending the strike beyond Thursday, Caroline Chevé of the FSU stated that one day will not be enough, and the yellow vest coordination projected an Act IV with renewed blockades, strikes, and protests on November 6 and 7.
