The snowstorm in Weihai City, Shandong Province, China continues to intensify. The local Wendeng Station has more than 70 centimeters of snow, breaking the historical extreme.

According to reports from The Paper and China News Service, it has snowed continuously for three days and three nights since the evening of Tuesday (December 19). As of the morning of Friday, the winter solstice (22), the snow depth at Weihai Wendeng Station reached 74 centimeters, setting a new record. .

The Shandong Peninsula has seen many cold snowfalls since December. Monitoring from the Central Meteorological Observatory shows that as of 8 a.m. on Thursday (21st), the snow accumulation in Yantai reached 52 centimeters and in Wendeng 55 centimeters. Among them, Wendeng broke the snow accumulation record on December 13, 2005 (54 centimeters).

Snowfall in the Shandong Peninsula continued on Thursday, with local heavy snowfall (14 to 18 mm) in Weihai, Shandong. On Friday morning, the snow depth at Weihai Wendeng Station reached 74 centimeters, breaking the snow depth record set on Thursday since the station was established.

The Central Meteorological Observatory predicts that the snowfall on the Shandong Peninsula will gradually weaken from day to night on Friday, with light to moderate snow in some areas.

According to the Meteorological Bureau of Yantai City, Shandong Province, Yantai and Weihai are typical coastal cities. Due to heavy snowfall in winter, they have formed a unique coastal snow city style and are known as “Chinese Snow Nests”. The snowfall in the two cities is mainly cold snow, accounting for more than 80% of the total snowfall days. Meteorological statistics from Yantai Laishan Airport show that the average annual number of local cold snow days is about 39 days.

Yang Chengfang, chief forecaster of the Shandong Provincial Meteorological Observatory, said that the snowstorm was an extreme event. From December 15th to 17th and December 20th to 22nd, Yantai and Weihai experienced two consecutive cold snowstorms. Due to the short interval between the two heavy snowfalls, the low temperature, the snow depth was large, and the snow accumulation lasted for a long time. Failure to do so will have adverse impacts on urban operations, transportation and energy supply in these two places.
