The UFSBD warns of several practices popularized by social networks: dental mutilation, use of non-professional orthodontic treatments and use of bleaching products.

Filed teeth, poses of “veneers”, clarifications… For several years, trends in whitened or trimmed teeth have been very popular on social networks. The French Union for Oral Health (UFSBD) has taken hold of the phenomenon and warned of the consequences of such practices for dental health.

“These practices, under the guise of aesthetic claims, which include unnecessary dental mutilation, unprofessional orthodontic treatment and the use of non-compliant dental whitening products, can seriously compromise oral health,” alert the UFSBD.

The union points to the responsibility of social networks in the development of these phenomena, praised by certain influencers. She said to herself “particularly concerned with the promotion of cosmetic dental procedures to change the positioning of teeth, which in reality amount to dental mutilation, such as filing or cutting of teeth”. All the teeth are filed down in order to then place crowns on them.

“A denture at 30”

Several dentists, present on social networks, have also warned of the dangers of filing teeth, “shark teeth”. One of them, Doctor Kevin, devoted a video to it on his TikTok channel. It tells the story of a young man who, five years after having had his teeth filed and put in crowns, had to have all of his diseased teeth extracted. to the root ». “He will have dentures at 30”.

Orthodontic treatments, outside dental practices, are also singled out. While these acts require the expertise of a professional, the fact of undergoing them outside a practice “can lead to serious complications, adverse outcomes and deterioration of oral health”.

Latest decried trend, dental whitening. “The UFSBD warns against the use of dental whitening products sold on the Internet whose composition does not comply with the regulations in force”. They could, according to the Union, contain dangerous ingredients. She recalls that dental surgeons are the only experts capable of providing appropriate treatment.
