The Monastery of St. Avvakum came into the news after the revelation of a scandal with financial and sexual ramifications, which came to light.
Cameras recorded monks having sex inside the monastery, while financial audits by the competent services revealed unjustified amounts of money amounting to 800,000 euros in the monastery’s safe. The two monks involved in the scandal also own real estate (an apartment in Piraeus and one in Limassol), while it remains unclear how these houses were acquired and to what extent the faithful’s offers have been abused.
Recently, Abbot Nektarios in an interview referred to 100 families who could not have children and through the Monastery, as he claims, they finally had a child. THE Cyprus Times reveals that the two monks under investigation may not have appeared before the Holy Synod last Friday, however the monk (archimandrite) who is publicly referred to as “the man” of Metropolitan Tamasos and is accused of sexual harassment did appear.
As mentioned in a publication from Friday, in the letters delivered to the members of the Holy Synod by the two monks, a complaint is made against a monk, whom they describe as a man of Metropolitan Tamasos, with a mission to trap Archimandrites Nektarios and Porphyrios. On Monday afternoon (11/3) a fourth monk filed a complaint with the Police for what took place on Tuesday night at the Holy Monastery of Saint Abvakum in Fterikoudi.
In his complaint, the monk also refers to the audio-visual materials, revealing that the videos shown to him by Metropolitan Tamasos came from the area of confessions.
Specifically, he states that “from the videos they showed me, I began to worry about the faithful, since the place where the videos were taken was where the confessions were made for the faithful, and therefore Metropolitan Tamasos and his team watched the confessions of the faithful illegally and as if I was thinking, she uttered the following: ‘I know your confession and other confessions of the faithful’.
Among other things, the monk says in his complaint that “Tamasou started screaming and in an imposing manner told me ‘sign or the Elder will go to prison and tonight they will be published on Youtube and Netflix'”.
Video from the closed circuit surveillance of the Holy Monastery of Saint Avvakum in Fterikoudi, secured by SigmaLive, shows, among other things, two men carrying the safe.
This is the safe that is said to have contained €800,000.
Initially in the video, specifically at 16:49, at least six vans appear to arrive at the Monastery. At around 17:42 hooded men are seen outside the Monastery area while a minute later the door opens and two people carry the safe.
