One week after a dramatic solar eclipse obscured over 90% of the sun across Switzerland on August 12, regional hospitals in Romandy report that public anxiety vastly outpaced actual medical damage. Despite thousands flocking to vantage points like Lausanne’s Vidy beaches, major clinics in Morges, Lausanne, Fribourg, and Geneva recorded only precautionary checks and isolated cases of solar retinopathy.
The Rush to the Summits and the Warning Signs
On August 12, a rare astronomical alignment drew crowds across Switzerland. Romands rushed to high-altitude vantage points, clogged roadways, and scrambled to secure specialized solar filters. Public health warnings had flashed across media outlets ahead of the event, cautioning against the temptation to view the sun directly without certified protection—a hazard famously underscored when Donald Trump gazed at an eclipse unprotected.
But the intense public interest also triggered widespread anxiety about potential retinal damage among those who feared they caught a glimpse of the unfiltered rays.
Following the celestial event, Le Nouvelliste surveyed emergency wards and specialized ophthalmology clinics across the French-speaking cantons to measure the actual clinical fallout. The data revealed that panic outweighed pathology.
At the Ensemble Hospitalier de la Côte in Morges, Vaud, exactly five individuals checked in out of an abundance of caution. None of them received a diagnosis of solar retinopathy or any other eclipse-related ocular trauma.
Further east, the Jules-Gonin Ophthalmic Hospital in Lausanne primarily fielded worried phone calls from citizens questioning whether brief exposures had compromised their vision. In Fribourg, medical staff logged roughly twenty phone inquiries alongside eight physical consultations. None of those evaluations turned up permanent ocular damage.
The sole exception in the regional survey emerged in Geneva. According to the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG), medical teams registered roughly fifteen total consultations in the days following the event and confirmed one singular case of solar retinopathy.
