A total of 144,012 foreigners residing in Spain were able to acquire the nationality of the country last year. Among this year’s naturalized citizens, the most frequent nationality of origin among these people was none other than that of Morocco.

The vast majority of Moroccans automatically obtained citizenship by living in Spain for at least 10 years, as provided by the law of that European country. It was followed by those of Colombia (8,328) and Ecuador (8,325).

Moreover, on January 1 of the current year, Moroccans legally established in Spain numbered just over 879,900. They are the first foreign community legally settled in the Iberian kingdom reaching 16% of all foreigners established in the country.

By gender, 52.2% of those who acquired Spanish nationality were women and 47.8% men.

By age, the largest category is those between 40 and 49, followed closely by the group between 30 and 39.
