Sony and Honda want to integrate a PlayStation 5 into their self-driving car

Sony Honda Mobility, this association between the two companies which aims to come and play on the same ground as Tesla by producing autonomous cars, could rely on the PlayStation and its huge catalog of games.

According to Izumi Kawanishi, head of Sony Honda Mobility, it would be “technologically possible” to integrate a PlayStation 5 into the cabin of the group’s first autonomous car. The overall idea being todevelop a car as hardware that will adapt to the entertainment and network we would like to offer”, according to Yasuhide Mizuno, general manager of Honda Motor Co.

Sony Honda Mobility’s vehicle would therefore be an entertainment machine on wheels. And for that, the car must be perfectly autonomous, which is far from easy to set up. “To take advantage of the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don’t need to drive,” says Kawanishi, who acknowledges that the perfect solution is far from being found.

Opposite, Tesla is also struggling to deploy its AutoPilot mode, which is currently in beta on more than 160,000 vehicles. Which explains why Sony Honda Mobility announces a launch date for its first vehicle for 2026 at the earliest.

By then, the PlayStation 6 may already be in our homes.
