What is VRR?

The VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is the variable refresh rate applied to an image to improve its sharpness. So the main purpose of VRR is to eliminate screen tearing, a kind of visual problem that causes the picture to flicker on your TV.

Screen tearing occurs when your TV’s image refresh is out of sync with the rate at which your console or PC graphics card sends images. You then end up with an image on the screen that displays, for example, the upper half ahead of the lower half. This is called the ” tearing ».

Example of tearing in a game

Tearing becomes noticeable when using a 60Hz TV and the game frame rate fluctuates between 45fps and 60fps. This is especially noticeable in fast-moving games like FPS. VRR eliminates this by synchronizing the refresh rate of the display with that of the console output. We are also freed from the constraints of classic V-Sync. We can thus exceed 30 im/s, even if theframerate does not consistently reach 60 fps.

VRR is now part of the HDMI 2.1 standard – which also supports eARC – and is a feature of next-gen Xbox Series X, Series S and PS5 consoles. It is therefore necessary that your TV is compatible. This technology will also allow you to benefit from the capabilities of your television, 120 Hz on many screens (including most OLEDs), but also 144 Hz on the latest announced Samsung screens.
