Sony reviews PlayStation Plus and suspends prepaid cards

The PS Plus redesign leads to the suspension of prepaid cards.

Sony is about to merge the PlayStation Plus and the PlayStation Now, while reviewing its online service. This redesign involves the suspension of certain features, including the validity of PlayStation Plus prepaid cards. Players who buy these cards have reason to feel aggrieved, thankfully Sony took the lead and explained that it was a temporary deactivation.

Sony clarifies card deactivation

As the situation was confusing, a support email was sent to clarify things. According to the email, it is temporarily impossible to combine PS Plus and PS Now subscriptions on already active subscriptions. In other words, those who are already subscribed to PS Plus or PS Now cannot re-subscribe via a prepaid card at this time. It is also specified that additional information will come soon.

If the problem is temporary, the manufacturer does not provide any details on the technical reasons which are the cause. Sony’s online service overhaul is underway, and the new PlayStation Plus will launch at the end of June. It will include 3 formulas: Essential, Extra and Premium.

The different services of the new PlayStation Plus

With the first PlayStation Plus Essential tier, you’ll find yourself on familiar ground. Indeed, the service includes the benefits of PS Plus that we already have: online play, free games every month, discount on purchase and cloud saves.

The PlayStation Plus Extra includes everything available in the Essential package, plus PS4 and PS5 games for download. If we don’t have more information on this at the moment, it is more than likely that the PS4 generation will be advantaged at the start. Around 400 games will be available at launch.

Finally, the PlayStation Plus Premium offer includes everything mentioned above. It also allows to play retro games i.e. PSOne, PS2 and PSP for download. PS3 games are also available for streaming via the Cloud.
