Sony Introduces Soneium Ecosystem Coin
On October 26, Sony Group’s Web3-associated blockchain ecosystem Soneium announced plans to introduce its native ecosystem coin, SONEIUM, with the initiative aimed at connecting entertainment intellectual property, creators, developers, fans, and investors through an on-chain economy, as reported by Yahoo Finance.
Infrastructure Built for Tokenized IP
As of its launch date, Soneium already supports more than 250 applications across gaming, music, anime, film, collectibles, and fan creations. Its next operational phase centers on tokenized intellectual property. This setup could allow creators and rights holders to develop new funding models while giving fans opportunities to support entertainment properties directly. Planned products include IP Vault, providing indirect access to entertainment investment opportunities, and IP Bond, a bond product backed by entertainment businesses.
The first project under the initiative is Moriusa, a character IP from Tokyo-based entertainment group Super State Holdings. Soneium also plans to work with K-op IP company DayOneDream to tokenize concert-business royalties. Soneium is developing an Onchain IP Architecture that includes an IP Registry, IP Graph, and IP Execution Layer to connect creative works, licensing terms, and revenue mechanisms.
Yuji Kumagai Outlines Creator Focus
Yuji Kumagai, Head of Soneium Protocol, addressed the strategy behind the new coin launch in the announcement.
Entertainment starts with creators. Today, Soneium enters a new stage built to stand behind them.
Kumagai added that the platform would help creators fund their work at a new scale while exploring new forms of expression and connections with fans. Tokenized IP could allow creators to seek funding from communities, while programmable revenue mechanisms distribute proceeds according to predefined arrangements.
Soneium Infrastructure Could Support PlayStation and GTA 6
The announcement raises questions for gamers regarding whether blockchain could become part of the future of PlayStation and major franchises such as Grand Theft Auto VI. Soneium’s infrastructure is designed to make IP licensing, attribution, and royalty distribution programmable on-chain. Similar technology could support authorized digital collectibles, licensed fan projects, or alternative ways of funding entertainment ventures, though concrete plans linking PlayStation or GTA 6 to the SONEIUM coin have not been announced.
