Sony will launch two new PS5, smaller and lighter

The Japanese manufacturer is about to offer two new versions of its PS5. Under the hood, these new versions are identical to the previous ones, but have undergone a slimming cure.

Sony is preparing two new revisions of the PS5. This new edition of the Japanese manufacturer’s console, expected for September 15, has already appeared in some Japanese online stores.

If the technical sheet of these new models seems a priori identical to that of the current PS5, the two new editions, standard (with optical reader) and Digital are smaller and lighter. The Australian media Press-Startwhich reports that these new models are already available in the country, also tells us a little about these two revisions.

Having the code names CFI-1202A and CFI-1202B respectively, the PS5 Standard and the PS5 Digital Edition would be 13% smaller than the previous models. The model with optical drive would thus display a weight of 3.9 kg on the scale, while the PS5 Digital Edition would only be 3.5 kg. When it was released, the PS5 was the largest and heaviest console on the market, at 4.5 kg for the Standard version and 3.9 kg for the Digital Edition respectively.

Sony had already given its console a slimming cure during its first revision launched in 2021. The two models had already lost nearly 300 grams each. A drop in weight which was due to the change of heat sink, which had significantly improved the evacuation of the heat generated by the console.

According to Ars Technica, the weight loss of this new revision could be attributed to the fact that Sony would have opted for a new chip engraved in 6 nm. Its use would make possible a complete internal redesign with less heavy components, and potentially, a new heat sink even lighter than the previous one.

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has been a victim of its success, but also and above all of the shortage of components. The console is, therefore, increasingly difficult to find on the shelves, existing stocks being distilled drop by drop in physical stores and on merchant sites. Current inflation, rising energy and raw material costs should not improve the situation. If you are still looking for a PS5, you will indeed have to pay a little more to acquire the precious console, Sony having announced a few days ago an increase around fifty euros for his console.
