The flagship Xperia mobile phones launched by Sony in recent years are mainly aimed at professional users. The shooting and video recording software are like professional-grade cameras and video recorders, providing many detailed shooting settings. Recently, it has been rumored that the next-generation flagship phones Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI will add digital signature technology to the mobile phone for the first time to ensure that the image content is actually shot, rather than AI-generated content.

Sony has issued a press release recently, stating that it will provide system software updates for three cameras including A9 III, A1 and A7S III in March next year, which will add C2PA (Content Provenance and Authenticity) identity verification information to ensure that the photos are authentic The content is shot on location rather than generated by AI. Sony adds this authentication information to the images captured by Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI. It should not be technically difficult to do so.

Although the addition of digital signature technology and functions to Sony Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 5 VI may be the first of its kind in the world on mobile phones, I personally don’t think users will buy the phones because of this feature. This is because photographers may need to use photos with verification data in the future to participate in large-scale photography competitions. However, for ordinary users, adding an image authenticity verification function to their mobile phones does not seem to be of any practical use.
