What makes Apnéal unique is that it does not have no need for electrodes, bracelets or other medical equipment to detect the‘Sleep Apnea. A simple one piece of adhesive and a smartphone are enough, with guaranteed compatibility for 90% of current phone models.

The application uses the microphone as well as two sensors, the accelerometer and the gyroscope, to record up to 1,500 measurements per second. According to Severin Benizri, one of the co-founders of Apnéal, the smartphone must be positioned on the chest, with the microphone directed towards the mouth and attached to the pajamas using a standard adhesive bandage.

The data recorded during sleep is then sent to Apnéal’s servers, where artificial intelligence algorithms analyze them. These algorithms were developed by studying patients equipped with both a smartphone and a polysomnograph, the gold standard medical device for measuring sleep.

Doctor Justine Frida, pulmonologist and sleep specialist, supervises an ongoing clinical study in three countries, involving 500 patients. Preliminary results show a “very good agreement” between the estimates provided by Apnéal and the results of polysomnography, with reliability estimated at 90%.

The ultimate goal for Apnéal is to obtain certification as a software medical device and CE marking, a process that could take up to three years. In the meantime, the test version of the application should be available in September 2024, with an estimated price of less than 50 euros per examination and the hope of 70% coverage by Social Security.
