Defects at Böhler Hospital apparently greater than known

According to a report in the “Kronen Zeitung” citing the relevant report, the construction defects at the AUVA trauma center in Vienna-Brigittenau, which is about to be closed, are greater than known. Accordingly, the steel beams of the building would only have lasted for 15 minutes in the event of a fire. The General Accident Insurance Institute (AUVA) only wanted to “confirm the substance” of the report to the APA “due to a lack of knowledge of the excerpts available”.

According to AUVA, the shortcomings of the fire protection coating came to light as part of a “comprehensive inventory analysis” of the hospital carried out in January and February. The result of the analysis was then available in February, it was said. It was previously known that the existing fire resistance of the steel structure was 30 minutes, as the expert responsible for the investigation stated more than a week ago in the Ö1 “Morgenjournal”. It was not clear on Saturday why the report quoted by the “Kronen Zeitung” now spoke of 15 minutes instead. In any case, the fire brigade and authorities would consider resistance for 90 minutes to be necessary, said the expert in charge of the investigation at the time.

The works council of the Lorenz Böhler Hospital requested these documents from the AUVA board of directors this week. Heinz Brenner from the works council of the Böhler Hospital pointed out on Saturday that the deficiencies had been known for 50 years. “The AUVA deliberately ignored the situation and thereby endangered patients,” said Brenner. He now demands questions and answers from the clinic’s management.

The AUVA did not want to go into more detail about the report with the APA. “Questions regarding the processing of the fire protection issue and related topics” could only be dealt with at a later date. They are currently working “24/7 across locations to enable the relocation of services and surgery appointments to other locations,” it said.
