South Florida Braces for Potential Atlantic System Impact – NBC 7 South Florida

Just at the start of the 2022 hurricane season, South Florida is already bracing for the first system that could make landfall in our area as soon as Friday.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a low pressure area that could develop near the Yucatan Peninsula, related in part to the remnants of Hurricane Agatha, which formed in the Pacific.

Energy from Agatha’s remnants will continue to move northeast toward the Gulf of Mexico and there is now an 80 percent chance that a tropical depression will form somewhere between the Yucatan Peninsula and the southern half of Florida.

If it develops into a tropical storm, which according to forecasts is possible, it would be called Alex.

Right now it looks like the impact will be more rain than wind, but that rain could be very heavy on Friday and Saturday. Some parts of South Florida could see up to 5 inches of rain.

So far it appears that Tropical Storm Alex or Hurricane Alex would form in the Atlantic, after the system crosses Florida.

A second potential system could form in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida in the next few days. With a 10 percent chance of formation in the next five days, the forecast is for it to move away from the United States.

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially began Wednesday with a more active-than-normal season forecast.
