Southland Voter Criticizes Christopher Luxon Ahead of Election

Ahead of the November 7 election, a 30-year-old Southlander shares her views on New Zealand politics, criticizing Christopher Luxon as incompetent and out of touch while backing the Green Party’s $2.8 billion plan to tackle the supermarket duopoly.

With New Zealand’s election set for November 7, voters are weighing in on the direction of the current coalition government, led by Christopher Luxon alongside Winston Peters and David Seymour. For one 30-year-old New Zealand Pākehā from Southland, the verdict on the administration is exceptionally critical.

The Southland voter, who lives in a two-person household and is currently unemployed while her partner works part-time in retail, expressed a very negative stance on the coalition government. She specifically pointed to the NZ First Gender Definitions Bill, ACT’s attempt with the Treaty Principles Bill, the cancellation of fair pay agreements, and New Zealand First’s desire to start mining in protected lands as policies that have rubbed her the wrong way.

She also addressed Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters, stating that he should have been sacked then and there following race-based remarks made in parliament to Lawrence Xu-Nan, where Peters told him to go back to his own country. She expressed support for Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong’s stance that she will not be in a government with him as foreign minister.

Aligning her vote with the Green Party because their platform matches her values, the Southlander voiced support for co-leaders Marama Davidson and Chloe Swarbrick, particularly praising their $2.8 billion plan to tackle the supermarket duopoly. Beyond climate and economic policies, she also expressed hope that the Opportunity party gains entry into parliament so they might form a coalition with Labour and the Greens.

Locally, she noted widespread community negativity surrounding the large AI data centre planned in Southland, known as the Datagrid Data Centre Park. Primary fears center on heavy water usage, other environmental factors, and noise pollution, with critics arguing the project was greenlit with little community consultation.

Views on the Labor Opposition, Social Policies, and Healthcare

Addressing health and social welfare issues, she strongly disagreed with the National Party’s proposal to randomly drug test people on job seekers’ benefits, arguing that people looking for work should not be punished. As an autistic person who experiences difficulties in the job market, she stated that current support and services for autism in New Zealand are lacking, pointing to long waits in the health system and a pressing need to hire more doctors, nurses, and psychiatrists.
