SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell announced plans during the company’s debut earnings call to turn Starlink Mobile into a full-fledged service launching by the end of 2027. The venture will utilize 65 megahertz of spectrum acquired from EchoStar and land-based infrastructure, rattling incumbent carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.
What began as a space-based safety net for cellular dead zones is scaling into a direct challenge to the domestic wireless establishment. During SpaceX’s first earnings call as a public company on August 4, 2026, executives outlined an aggressive strategy to build out terrestrial cellular infrastructure and capture market share from the nation’s dominant telecommunications providers. The announcement sent immediate ripples through the telecom sector, driving down shares of established operators as Wall Street analysts debated the technical and financial hurdles of the upcoming push.
Upgraded Satellites, EchoStar Spectrum, and a 2027 Launch Timeline
SpaceX’s path to becoming a nationwide carrier relies heavily on airwaves secured through prior transactions. The company acquired 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for a total of $19.6 billion through two deals announced in the prior year. In May, the Federal Communications Commission approved the transfer of those spectrum rights, giving SpaceX the legal authorization to pursue satellite, terrestrial, or hybrid applications.
During the conference call, Gwynne Shotwell detailed the performance gains enabled by these airwaves and next-generation hardware.

Another way to look at it is we will also probably 10x the number of satellites. So simplifying, you could look at the Starlink Mobile leveraging the next-generation satellite and the EchoStar spectrum as being 100 times better — 10 times 10 — than what we’ve got right now.”

The company plans to start launching these upgraded satellites in 2027, with the direct-to-consumer service expected to roll out by the end of that year. Shotwell noted that the upgraded network will support voice and video calls over Signal and WhatsApp
while eliminating dead zones and providing superior reliability during natural disasters.
Building Terrestrial Infrastructure Around Starlink Dishes
While Starlink Mobile currently operates as a satellite safety net for partners like T-Mobile—accounting for a fraction of a percent of network traffic during peak summer months—SpaceX intends to move beyond pure satellite-to-device connections by establishing a ground-based network.

To avoid the massive upfront capital expenditures traditionally required to build out nationwide cell towers, Elon Musk explained that SpaceX plans to deploy smaller cellular base stations with Starlink dishes. Musk argued that this approach bypasses the need for large, expensive cellular base stations that are difficult to locate and maintain.

Market Reaction and Analyst Debate Over the Big Three Threat
The competitive posture toward the nation’s dominant wireless providers was explicit. Sizing up the revenue generated by the incumbent operators, Shotwell noted that AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile generate hundreds of billions of revenue per year, adding, I anticipate us to be able to acquire quite a few of their customers because I think our service will be better.
That ambition quickly registered on Wall Street. Following the earnings call, shares of Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile fell between 1% and 2.4% in pre-market trading.
Industry analysts, however, remain divided on whether an upstart network can match the entrenched advantages of legacy operators who have spent decades acquiring spectrum and building physical infrastructure.
