Silverstone (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Spanish Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz takes pole at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, setting the fastest time in qualifying for the first time in his career in Formula One at Silverstone, where the 10th round of competition takes place.
The 27-year-old, in his 150th attempt in the first category and on a wet track due to rain during most of the testing, outperformed Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen, the title holder and leader in the drivers’ standings.
“It was a good lap,” said Science, thrilled with his achievement. “I was wrestling a lot because of the water on the track.”
“The faster timing was a surprise to me. We had the speed all weekend,” he added.
Charles Leclerc of Monaco (Ferrari) and Sergio “Chico” Perez (Red Bull) of Mexico confirmed the superiority of their teams since the beginning of the year by occupying the third and fourth places, respectively.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, owner of the land and holder of the record for the number of victories in Silverstone (8), finished fifth, while his colleague and young compatriot George Russell finished eighth.
Mercedes, Alpine and Williams made new modifications to their cars before entering the race, in what was considered a giant step for the “Silver Arrows” team after a disastrous start under the umbrella of the new laws.
