The investigation began about a year ago, on the basis of indications that a restaurant in Deurne (Antwerp) served as a cover for drug trafficking. “Customers could go there for cocaine, and the place was frequented by Albanian criminal men known for burglary, arms trafficking, counterfeiting and buying and selling drugs,” says the floor. The investigation then showed close contact between these suspects and a person of Spanish nationality living in Saint-Gilles-Waes, in eastern Flanders. The man would have a whole network of accomplices and would be in contact with port workers to organize the transport of drugs via Antwerp.

Wednesday’s searches took place, among other places, in Saint-Gilles-Waes, Bruges, Ixelles, Mechelen and Antwerp (Berchem and Deurne, more precisely). Thirty people were arrested and officers seized drugs, weapons, luxury items and large amounts of cash.
