Spartak Pleven: Konstantin Papazov in altercation with Orlin Nikolov

Konstantin Papazov faces severe backlash just 21 days into his tenure as president of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation, following a public denunciation by Sesame NBL club Spartak Pleven. Spartak released match footage from Trayaditsa Hall showing Papazov in a physical altercation with national referee instructor Orlin Nikolov.

Federation Instability Casts Shadow over League Integrity

The recent instability at the federation level has drawn intense scrutiny from stakeholders, including government officials, corporate directors, and prominent national coaches serving on the Management Board. The public nature of these disputes, coupled with allegations of direct interference in refereeing assignments and disciplinary procedures, has cast a shadow over the league’s administrative integrity.

The Incident at Trayaditsa Hall

Footage captured approximately two minutes before the final buzzer shows Papazov exiting alongside national referee instructor and Management Board member Orlin Nikolov. The door remained ajar, revealing a direct physical confrontation between the two officials. While the video itself does not clarify the specific catalyst for the physical contact, social media commentary from witnesses has intensified the fallout.

Spartak Pleven’s Scathing Indictment

Spartak Pleven did not mince words when publishing the video clip alongside a blistering statement condemning the federation leadership. The club’s executive board pointed directly at former president Georgi Glushkov for anointing Papazov as his successor. In Spartak Pleven we are ashamed that the Bulgarian Basketball Federation is represented by such a thing, the club declared in their official release. The statement further highlighted alleged heavy-handed interference in referee assignments and disciplinary actions by the newly installed administration.

According to the chairman of the Sports Club, Ivaylo Resilovski, the conduct exhibited during and after the matches between Levski and Cherno More, as well as Levski and Shumen, cannot be endured. The club also referenced a prior incident involving verbal aggression and a broken mobile device belonging to a referee following a match between Levski and Balkan. Addressing Orlin Nikolov’s status as a NATO officer, the statement included a pointed rhetorical question regarding whether he would be filled with rice and eaten, while also suggesting that the pressure exerted on various mayors by sports figures during the election campaign was done specifically to benefit Papazov.

Unresolved Administrative Crisis

Spartak Pleven’s public address challenged Management Board members—including government officials and corporate directors who backed Papazov’s election—to justify their continued association with the federation. With complaints mounting regarding intimidation and heavy-handed pressure on match officials, the domestic governing body faces a credibility test.
