Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe considers tougher steps
Vienna (OTS/SK) – After yesterday’s vote on a corresponding resolution in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, for which she is the rapporteur, SPÖ foreign policy spokeswoman Petra Bayr is calling on Turkey to immediately release the human rights activist Osman Kavala, who has been unjustly imprisoned since 2017. “Kavala is being held as a political prisoner because of his human rights activism. The European Court of Human Rights has clearly ruled that Turkey must release Kavala, and infringement proceedings by the Council of Europe once morest Turkey are already underway. The parliamentary assembly is now considering further steps – up to and including expelling Turkey from the Council of Europe. Yesterday the European community sent a clear signal that this treatment of political activists will not simply be tolerated. With this step we want to increase the pressure on Turkey to return to the rule of law and the protection of human rights. Kavala must be released immediately, then no expulsion will be necessary.” (Conclusion) sd/up
