Pforzheim. Around 40 years ago, Aidshilfe Pforzheim set itself the task of supporting people with HIV in the dying phase. AIDS is still incurable today, but has developed into an easily treatable disease. Thanks to modern medicine and medication, an HIV-positive person does not have to be contagious and, with good treatment and quality of life, has a normal life expectancy. The work in the Aidshilfe has also changed – and recently the name too. After three years of deliberation, the decision was made to use the name “Spotlight”. This is what the former AIDS organization writes in its statement.
“Our counseling center is now the contact point for all questions about sexual health. Due to the expansion of the work areas such as sexual education, advice on sexual and gender diversity and advice for people in sex work, the name of the association no longer seemed up to date Spotlight.
The former name often caused confusion among those seeking help.
“Changing the name was not an easy decision. We started the process three years ago,” emphasizes Claudia Jancura, head of the counseling center. We remain the single point of contact for questions about HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
“It is important to us that HIV-positive people continue to feel seen and heard, because many still suffer from exclusion and discrimination today. So our work is more important than ever,” says Timur Fuhrmann-Piontek, first chairman. However, the change of name is intended to make it clear that the association serves the entire spectrum of sexuality and health.
That’s behind the name
The name “Spotlight” makes it clear what the employees do with their work every day: devote themselves to topics that are not talked about enough, but which are nevertheless important. This includes sexuality, gender, health or sex work. In the one-on-one talks, too, full attention should be given to the person seeking help.
