Springfield secured $72,492,303 in state funding for accelerated school repairs during a virtual Massachusetts School Building Authority board meeting, city officials announced. The state board also greenlit the district’s preferred schematic design for a brand-new Gerena school building in the North End.
Millions Targeted for Accelerated School Infrastructure Repairs
The Massachusetts School Building Authority board authorized $72,492,303 in total funding dedicated to Accelerated Repair Program projects across multiple Springfield schools. City and school leaders joined the virtual session to lock in the capital investment, aiming to upgrade aging building systems and improve daily conditions for students.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall, and Chief Administrative and Financial Officer Cathy Buono participated in the board vote alongside SPS Chief Financial Officer Patrick Roach. Department of Capital Asset Construction Director Peter Garvey and Chief of Staff Molly Shea also joined city officials for the proceedings.
A New Vision for the Gerena School Site
Beyond the repair allocations, state officials approved the district’s recommendation for the preferred schematic design of a state-of-the-art replacement facility for the Gerena school building. The new construction project is slated for the historic Chestnut site in the heart of the North End.
City leadership has leaned heavily on state partnerships to finance these structural overhauls. “I cannot thank Treasurer Deb Goldberg and our Massachusetts School Building Authority enough for their dedication and support we continue to work toward getting more new school buildings constructed,” Mayor Sarno said regarding the ongoing state collaboration.
With the schematic design approved and millions in repair funds authorized, local administrators move closer to executing long-term capital improvements designed to modernize Springfield’s educational infrastructure.
