The St. Josef Hospital in Hietzing is the largest maternity hospital in Austria. The 100,000th child was recently born there. The results for 2023 are also impressive: 4,288 new citizens were welcomed in the hospital delivery rooms.
VIENNA/HIETZING. The St. Josef Hospital will also be busy in 2023. But not because a particularly large number of accidents and sick patients are cared for here. The hospital is the largest maternity hospital in Austria. Last year alone, 4,288 children were born there. On average, 11.6 births were counted per day.
“The team at our parent-child center has once again achieved great things last year, and I would like to thank all the doctors, midwives and nurses for that,” says the head of the obstetrics department, Andreas Brandstetter: “We are very pleased, that we were able to support many families well again.”
A total of 4,234 births were attended to, 54 of which were twin births. The women had the upper hand at St. Josef: 2,233 girls (52 percent of births) were born, 2,055 boys (48 percent).
Lots of Emilias and Noahs
Most of these girls are called “Emilia”, while the boys are called “Noahs”. On average, the little ones weighed 3,401 grams. However, a young mother had to do a lot; her child was born weighing an impressive 5,075 grams. The lightest newborn was cared for in neonatology and weighed 920 grams. You can’t plan a birth like that anyway, as this example shows: only six percent were actually born on the expected due date.
A very special arrival was celebrated on July 4, 2023. In the obstetric department, which opened in 1936, the 100,000th child was born on that day. MeinBezirk.at reported, more on that below. By the way, the medical staff at St. Josef didn’t have much time to relax after the pleasant but busy year of 2023. The New Year’s baby from Vienna was born in the order’s hospital on January 1, 2024 at 12:16 a.m.
