For the first time in 10 months, Stan Wawrinka (ATP 72) will find the last four of an ATP tournament. In the quarter-finals in Umag, Croatia, the Vaudois indeed dismissed Roberto Carballes Baena (59) 6-4 7-5 to join Lorenzo Sonego (43) in the semi-finals.
Stan Wawrinka, however, started badly by losing his entry service. However, he was able to remobilize quickly by taking the service of his opponent to pick up at 3-3. He then wasted no time in taking over Carballes Baena’s service game to conclude the first set with a score of 6-4.
Solid on his service after conceding the break in the first game of the game – since he no longer offered the slightest break point to the Spaniard – he was able to find the fault on the opposing service at 6-5 and thus avoid playing a tie-break always uncertain as to its outcome.
He now has to finish the job to sign the double at Umag after his 1st title 17 years ago and to win his first tournament for more than 6 years. If he evolves in the same register as Friday evening, he will have every chance against Lorenzo Sonego whose No. 1 asset is a forehand which can hurt a lot.
