Starfield almost became a PS5 exclusive at one point

A little over three years ago, weStarfield/ » title=”Insider: Sony was negotiating timed exclusivity on Starfield » target=”_blank”> revealed that Sony was in negotiations with Bethesda to make Starfield a PlayStation 5-exclusive title. Obviously, that didn’t happen as Microsoft announced plans to buy Bethesda soon after, a deal that was sealed the year next, with Starfield becoming an Xbox (and PC) exclusive title instead.

Now it turns out that Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda was actually a response to Sony’s plans to make Starfield a PlayStation game. Here’s what Xbox boss Phil Spencer had to say about it during the FTC hearings into Microsoft’s plan to acquire Activision Blizzard:

“When we acquired ZeniMax, one of the motivations for that was that Sony had made a deal for Deathloop and Ghostwire…to pay Bethesda not to ship those games to Xbox. So the Starfield discussion when we heard that Starfield was potentially going to end up skipping Xbox we can’t be in a third place console position where we fall even further behind on our content ownership so we had to secure the content to remain viable in the business. »

Starfield will be released on September 6 on PC and Xbox. Now, we know it might as well have been PC and PlayStation instead, which didn’t happen because Microsoft had other plans.
