Stay Cool and Safe in the Heat: Essential Tips and Preventive Measures

2023-09-03 20:55:01

As the region prepares to experience a heat wave, the Direction de la santé publique recommends a few simple tips to the population to apply in order to enjoy the summer period in complete safety despite the heat, which can sometimes be intense.

Preparation is the first step that should be given great importance, even before the heat sets in:

Listen to local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take additional action;

Identify cool spaces where you can cool off on very hot days;

Discuss with your loved ones the preventive measures to be applied in a heat situation;

Identify the people around you who may be at risk and who may need support during a heat wave.

When the heat becomes more intense, here is how it is possible to prevent the effects of heat on health:

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water without waiting to feel thirsty (water, milk, juice, herbal tea, etc.) in addition to consuming foods rich in water such as fruits and vegetables;

Stay cool by spending a few hours a day in air-conditioned or cooler areas of your residence;

Reduce physical exertion outdoors, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.;

Check in on your loved ones, friends and neighbors who are more at risk and remind them of the measures to apply.

Finally, it is essential to remain attentive to the appearance of symptoms that may be related to heat:

Headache;

Appearance of pimples on the skin (heat rash);

Signs of dehydration (thirst and dry mouth, decreased urge to urinate, dark colored urine);

Unusual tiredness or exhaustion;

Muscle cramps;

Rapid pulse and breathing;

Nausea or vomiting

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is strongly advised to go to a cool place and drink water to stay hydrated. And if you have any questions regarding your state of health, call Info-Santé 811 or consult a health professional, such as a pharmacist.
